Where Children Heal Through the Language They Know Best
Play Therapy in Tempe, Arizona
When Words Aren’t Enough
Young children often can’t articulate what they’re feeling or why they’re struggling. They don’t have the vocabulary to explain anxiety, process trauma, or describe what’s bothering them. But they can show you through play.
Play therapy recognizes that play is a child’s natural form of communication and self-expression. At Water Lily Health and Wellness, our trained play therapists create a safe, supportive environment where children use toys, games, art, and imaginative play to express emotions, work through challenges, and develop healthier coping skills—all without needing to “talk about their feelings” in traditional ways.
What Is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a specialized therapeutic approach designed for children typically ages 3-12. Instead of sitting and talking like adult therapy, children engage in structured and unstructured play activities that allow them to:
✓ Express emotions they can’t put into words
✓ Process difficult or traumatic experiences safely
✓ Develop problem-solving and coping skills
✓ Build self-esteem and confidence
✓ Learn emotional regulation through play-based practice
✓ Work through behavioral challenges in age-appropriate ways
Play becomes the medium through which healing happens. The toys, art materials, sand trays, puppets, and games aren’t just entertainment—they’re therapeutic tools that help children externalize internal struggles and develop mastery over difficult emotions.
Who Benefits from Play Therapy?
Play therapy is especially effective for children who are:
✓ Too young to engage in traditional talk therapy (typically under age 10-12)
✓ Experiencing anxiety, fears, or excessive worry
✓ Showing behavioral difficulties at home or school
✓ Processing grief, loss, or family changes (divorce, moving, new sibling)
✓ Coping with trauma or adverse experiences
✓ Struggling with peer relationships or social skills
✓ Dealing with anger management or emotional outbursts
✓ Facing developmental delays or challenges
✓ Showing regressive behaviors (bedwetting, clinginess, tantrums)
✓ Experiencing big emotions they don’t understand
If your child is struggling but can’t tell you why, or if traditional conversation-based approaches haven’t worked, play therapy may be the answer.

How Play Therapy Works
Child-Directed Play In many sessions, your child leads. They choose the toys, create the scenarios, and direct the play. This gives them control and agency—often lacking in their daily life—while the therapist observes, reflects, and gently guides therapeutic growth.
Therapist-Directed Activities Sometimes the therapist introduces specific games, art projects, or activities designed to address particular challenges—like emotion regulation games, social skills practice, or trauma processing exercises.
Symbolic Expression Children often work through real-life issues symbolically. A child dealing with family conflict might act out scenarios with dollhouse figures. A child processing fear might create stories with action figures facing danger and overcoming it. The therapist helps translate these symbolic narratives into healing and growth.
Skill Building Through Play Play therapy isn’t just cathartic—it’s instructive. Children learn and practice new skills like expressing feelings appropriately, solving problems, managing frustration, and building confidence through play-based activities.
Parent Involvement Depending on your child’s age and needs, parents may participate in sessions, receive regular updates, and learn strategies to support their child’s progress at home.
What to Expect
Initial Parent Consultation We begin with a conversation (without your child present) to understand your concerns, your child’s history, and what you’re hoping play therapy will address.
Building the Therapeutic Relationship The first few sessions focus on helping your child feel safe and comfortable in the playroom. Trust is essential for therapeutic progress.
The Playroom Our play therapy space is stocked with carefully selected toys and materials—dolls, action figures, art supplies, sand trays, puppets, games, and more—each serving a therapeutic purpose.
Sessions in Action Your child will engage in play while the therapist observes, participates when appropriate, and gently guides toward therapeutic goals. To an outsider, it looks like play. But it’s deeply intentional healing work.
Progress Updates We maintain regular communication with parents about themes emerging in play, skills being developed, and how to support your child’s growth at home—all while respecting your child’s therapeutic privacy.
Duration Play therapy timelines vary. Some children benefit from short-term intervention (8-12 sessions), while others need longer support. We’ll reassess progress regularly.
Why Play Works
It’s Developmentally Appropriate Young children’s brains aren’t wired for abstract verbal processing. Play allows them to work through issues in ways that match their cognitive and emotional development.
It Feels Safe Talking directly about scary or painful experiences can be overwhelming for children. Play provides distance and control—they can approach difficult material indirectly, at their own pace.
It Builds Mastery Through play, children practice handling situations, expressing emotions, and solving problems. They develop confidence and competence that transfers to real life.
It’s Natural Communication Play is how children make sense of their world. When we meet them in their natural language, healing happens more organically and effectively.
